Seen the film? What did you think?
Alix and I have just returned from the first incredible premiere screening of our movie, where we received a number of on-the-spot reviews from people we both knew very well and had never met before. And we loved it. There's nothing like knowing that, after allowing themselves to become immersed in your work, somebody feels moved to express their view ... whether it's positive or negative. So, if you've seen the movie and would like to share your views with others, we'd really like to know what you thought. Only one warning: try not to 'spoil' the plot. Otherwise, write on! |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
Just got back from the premiere screening of When Evil Reigns, which was great fun! (Warning: some spoilers ahead - but nothing too specific). Before we get to the good stuff, the inevitable niggles :) The film - as advertised - was *extremely* low budget, and occasionally suffered as a result; however, most of the failings were extremely minor, and cover the sort of things you'd expect in a low-budget (or, as co-creator Alix Jackson put it, 'No budget') movie: Only three major niggles, and these are probably just personal gripes: - Much of the early dialogue, having been recorded in big echo-y locations, was virtually inaudible. - The first half-hour of the film, which served as a (quite tedious) location and character set-up, failed to live up to the exciting and unsettling opening scene. - Lack of internal consistency. At various times, the Infected seemed to be (and behave like) either the Undead, mindless psychopaths, or sentient psychopaths, depending upon the needs of any given scene. Then again, maybe that was the point, and I missed it. That said, this movie turned out to be really enjoyable. Aside from a few wodges of clunky dialogue, the script was pretty tight. The acting was also pretty decent, aside from an occasional BBC-style soliloquy. What most impressed me about the film was the atmosphere of genuine creepiness and occasional fright. A very good score, along with decent camerawork, accounted for much of this. I'd also commend the film makers for mostly staying away from outright gore (the few fairly realistic examples of which tended to make the audience giggle, if nervously), which again benefited the atmosphere of the piece. Definitely worth the price of admission! My favourite scenes? Well, there's a nice dialogue between two characters over a mobile phone, which - as you might expect - doesn't have a happy resolution. I also simultaneously laughed and shuddered at the preceding scene, which involves a charcter breaking into a house to find weapons, and being confronted by a respectable-looking man covered in blood. The bloodstained guy, seemingly dazed by everything that's going on, says: "They're all dead! Upstairs - they're all dead upstairs.' The protagonist tries to calm the guy by saying that he only wants to take a torch and a weapon. "Then I'll get out of your house." "Oh, this isn't my house," says bloodstained guy amiably, as he pulls out a bloodstained knife... If this is an indication of things to come, I'd suggest keeping an eye on the Jackson boys. Congratulations, Luke and Alix! Cheers, Chuck |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
Hi Chuck, Thanks so much for writing your review; it's great to come back from such an incredible event and be able to read other people's responses to it immediately. I thought your views about the film were totally valid, and would encourage other viewers to give us similarly honest feedback. Just one technical issue: While the cinema was a terrific venue, I have to say - having watched the Master - that the projection and sound systems didn't really do the film justice, so you'll have to watch the film on DVD to hear the dialogue which you (quite rightly) called 'inaudible' and to see the clarity that we managed to get in some of those darker scenes. |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
I want to again offer my congrats to Luke, Alix and everyone involved in WER. For a 'no budget' film, it was very impressive. There were the expectant problems - namely some sound problems, some dodgy acting and the script was in need of some exposition at times, but on the plus side, it was well-edited, some very nifty camera-work and the effects were effective. And, probably most important, it was entertaining! Well done guys. |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
Hi Alix and Luke, I just wanted to congratulate you and everyone involved in making When Evil Reigns. It`s pleasing to see a feature length film that has a story you can follow from start to finish, particularly in a film such as yours where sometimes the horror/gore elements can overshadow everything else! I also like the way you weaved little sub plots between some of the characters and the subtle humour you sprinkled throughout! Well done! I wish you all much success with the film! |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
Hey Guys, I got my copy of When Evil Reigns in the mail on Friday. And I watched it today. And then the directors commentary. And then the awesome 'how to do make up' documentary. You've more than inspired me. I'm now determined to make my very own no budget horror film. I'm currently writing up a script and throwing around ideas. But I'd like to thank you guys for showing me it can be done. You just need to get up and do it. Also, I kind of want to try making my own bullet wounds... You know, just for the hell of it. |

Re: Seen the film? What did you think?
We had a lot of hits at the IMDB site, it seems, not all good at all. If someone that actually liked aspects of the film could post some kind of review on there, that would be terrific. |
