How do you control a lovebird from laying too many eggs?
My proven pair of violet lovebirds will continuously lay eggs (between 10-17 eggs in a clutch). The success rate is slim because of too many eggs. I tried taking the excess eggs away, but the female will lay more to replace those. How do you control how many eggs she'll lay and sit on? |

take out the nest box. if they are laying too many eggs, take out the nest box and let them rest for a couple of months, and then try again. usually when they lay that many eggs, they know that the egs are infertile, so maybe you have young birds, or one of them might be infertile. |

In May you should remove the box(ex) And Not return them to the cages until October. That gives the birds a rest and gives you a chance to dig out the nesting boxes and sanitize them for next season. Remember to stop feeding them the breeding food if you have been. As to how many she's laying at one time...You might want to remove the male. If he's hopping, she's laying. That's nature. Mine's got 5 right now and I'm worried that it' might be too much for her. She's only laid clutches of 3 up till now. |
