how to train lovebirds?
After shopping unsuccessfully for hand-fed lovebirds, I finally bought a pair that were not hand-raised. They are peach-faced. I'm told one is four months old, the other six months old, and they have bonded with each other. I've been spending time with them, trying to avoid sudden movements or doing anything to scare them, patiently holding a sunflower seed where they can get it, but they generally stay on the opposite side of the cage from me. Is there any hope of ever getting these guys to sit on my finger and be friendly, and if so, how does one go about accomplishing that? Thanks for any tips! |

I made the same mistake steve. this is what a breeder told me 2 weeks after: you need to seperate the 2 from eachother.wait a couple of days when they are wanting to bond to someone.then you start back what you were doing.this time do the trick in dark training. let the bird wash up{ bathe } and right after remove him from cage and bring him into a small dark room [ bathroom is good ]make sure toilet seat is closed. and no light comming in from windows at all! have a flash light next to you on the floor,incase he escapes..no sudden movements if this happens.keep a water bottle with you incase you need to spray him well at the wings when he does escape, this way he is totally helpless and cant go anywhere..now! he will have to trust you! and this is when the trust and bonding starts, speak in a gentle voice and reasure him.do this everyday.if posible and if and when you start noticing he is trusting you you can start allowing light back into the room a little at a time every day he can get more light as long as he is staying on your finger or lap. bring a favorit snack or fruit in w/ you and say good lovie and praise him softly for staying with you every time at the end of the dark sesion. now the lovie is attaching itself to you. remember to do this with both of them. it will take some work but the reward is worth it. once they love you to death..then you can allow them play time together when your not home or when you just want to have both play and spend time with you. let me know how things turn up ....good luk |
