I don't think it matters, because there is very little electrical load on an NG.
Mine has an SDI alternator purely because the engine came from an SDI.
The MBG one should fit just as well.

Thanks for that,is your battery under the bonnet?This all started because my battery was boiling up after a long journey couldn't understand why.So I had to have the alternator checked out and if it needed replacing there were no identification marks on it.I also had the battery checked to see if there had been a short.Both were ok,so the only other explaination would be over heating as mentioned by Donnie in past posts.
I think I've managed to cure it by wraping the battery in aluminium heat resistant tape seems OK for now.
If that dosen't do it I'll have to move the battery to the back of the car.

My battery is in the passenger footwell, which is not great for some passengers. I want to move it and put it under the bonnet in place of the heater, which we never use, I get enough heat from the engine!
