family lineage
I am a student of Kali and i must agree on what Maestra Beverly is saying. If she is a direct "bloodline" family member from Lucaylucay then she has every right to promote or demote within the system. Especially if she herself was taught under the same lineage as Ted and her father Lucky. If she can't continue her family's teachings then honestly, who can?!? A lot of students tend to forget that the filipino martial arts were only meant for the secracy of the family. Meaning that you were only considered a student if you were a family member or invited into the group. Thats how the secret was always passed down from generation to generation. It is only recently that the arts has emerged from family members to the public eye. Now being a direct descendant from the Lucaylucay family, i stongly believe that Maestra Beverly can do what ever she wants. Guro Ted did it from his father, why can't she?!? I mean no disrespect to anyone on this post or fellow students of the filipino martial arts. I'm just concerned for all the drama and dirty politics that has tainted some of these practices. The filipino community is very family oriented and close. A true practioner of this art would recognize that and respect all the values of where this art came from. Not just banging sticks around and fighting with knife. Email: wasab1mike@yahoo.com Area of Martial Arts Study: lucaylucay kali |

From the 1995 interview with Guro Ted. Beverly should TRY to practice what her Brother actually PREACHED! STEVE: What is the philosophy behind Temujin? What does that mean? TED: Temujin is the name of our organization: Temujin Lucaylucay Kali/JKD. Temujin was the name of Gengis Khan, the Mongolian leader, and it was Temujin who became the great conqueror. It think the Chinese gave him the name of Gengis Khan, as far as the philosophy, Temujin was the man who brought all the Mongolian tribes together. I remember talking about all the controversy earlier with all the different JKD factions now. They are all apart and yet they all come from the same family. Like the Mongolian tribes who were scattered living apart for so long and surviving, by stealing and robbing. Temujin comes along and brings them all together and makes them into one great conquerors and developers. That’s what we are trying to do since there is bad vibes, politics and controversy going on. We like to use the concept of Temujin to bring all the JKD people together; (those who want to come together) and learn how to live, change, share, and grow, with more togetherness and harmony. If primitive Mongolian tribes can do something like that, here we are suppose to be a more civilized, educated people or nation, it would seem a little more easier for us. Our direction right now is to bring the people who want to get along together, not to create controversy among each other, and not getting involved in the nasty politics. These are the ones that are most prone to doing and enjoying what we want to do and pushing towards the same goal. And that is to get along. |

The right path It saddens me to read all these negatives post against each other. where in turn we are all students of Kali. I just want to set the record straight on the most respectable way. Jerry, I don't know you, and we have never met. But judging on the response of your fellow students, you must be a great practioner of the arts and a phenomenal teacher. So many have come to your side and aide you on this issue. That in itself shows character. And by you continuing the lucaylucay system in your ciriculum is very admirable. With that being said, i think its about time to straighten out this misunderstanding. Maestra isn't here to start any drama or disvalue anyone's rank. It's not like she was surfing the web trying to take over the legacy one website at a time. To tell you the truth, she was at first vey happy to see that an old acquaintance of her and her brother has started a forum. What really got to her was that letter you posted on your website about family has no business continuing the teachings of the lucaylucay system. As you can imagine, Maestra was very hurt and offended by that article. She may have said some thing to disrespect you and your fellow students during the heat of the moment, but i can assure you it was only in defense of what she read. Maestra Beverly and Guro Ted we raised in the same house and therefore shared the same family values. We all know that the path that this is leading towards is the wrong one. And it needs to stop now. It is true that Guro Ted started a Phenomenal movement and by no means is Beverly trying to overshadow that. She simply is overseeing the direction of the movement. There will be many students in the near future learning the lucaylucay system. I believe both parties can agree on that. With that being said, i see no harm in you and your fellow students continuing the pratice of the art. All I ask is that you show the same respect to Maestra and other family memebers of the lucaylucay family as Ted showed to all practioners of the martial arts. I believe the family also earned the right to carry on the spirit that Ted has left for them as well. Like i said in the beginning, i do not know who you are but i respect your curriculum. If we meet in the future, i would hope to have earned your respect by following the same curriculum, just from a different sibling of Lucaylucay. As your students come by to defend their teacher, I stand by mine to do the same. I'd rather greet with handshakes, than sticks and gloves drawn. If lines will be crossed in a negative reaction, then so be it. I just hope both parties can choose the right path. 'I am a student of Kali' ~ Michael Malicdem So you're a student? As in you think Kali is cool and decided to pick it up or do you know the history and traditions of the art and the different systems it branches out from? Maybe you should stop cut and pasting from other sites and start speaking your mind? |

'yes i do believe in family...'~michael malicdem Your name sounds familiar, when I use to live in San Diego I knew of a malicdem. So I pulled up your name on our database and it looks like you are from San Diego and you worked as a cook at a joint called Seaus? You're not the same michael malicdem that destroyed a happy family are you? According to you - you said 'yes i do believe in family'~michael malicdem I had a good friend Die because of this michael malicdem that didn't care about family. When I say Die, I mean as a person. My friend no longer believes in anything or in anyone anymore. I haven't talked to him in years. Basically he has shut the world out and lives alone, because he put so much trust in this michael malicdem. It's kind of a coincidence that your name is michael malicdem, you're from San Diego, tell me do you have 2 brothers? My husband thinks he knows you. He went to Mount Carmel High School (sound familiar?) Now tell me do you really believe in family. |

Why did this guy show up and stir this box of dung up again? If I were to receive a PHD in Medicine from USC, can the new, self proclaimed Dean of Students (which is debatable, evidently)proclaim that my credentials are no longer valid on a whim or due to some racial criteria that I don't meet? Would I then no longer be a doctor? Is it your contention that one must be Philipino to be a valid practitioner of an art? You mention that...."A lot of students tend to forget that the Philipino martial arts were only meant for the sec racy of the family. Meaning that you were only considered a student if you were a family member or invited into the group. Thats how the secret was always passed down from generation to generation". Man....All the non-Philipino students of Kali smuggled themselves into classes while the instructor was unaware?.....for years? Can I be an Engineer or a Lawyer or a Fireman if I'm not of the correct ethnic background? What kind of world would that be brother? I think they have a name for that. I'm not a martial artist and I think know that there was no problem here until you and other family members went out of your way to bring it here. What I haven't a clue about, is why? I'd like to have a magic 8 ball too, that will tell me how my dead Dad thinks about things. This is the kind of crap that keeps people away from the martial arts. You never here a boxer or a wrestler in this ridiculous argument. |
