intense jaw pain after root canal

I've had intense right jaw pain (not teeth pain) that radiates down the side of my jaw. It can range from a dull soreness/achiness to sharp shooting pain to a vice grip pain. My dentist thought it was trigeminal neuralgia but the neurologist disagreed because I dont have the sensitivity to touch, wind on the righ side my mouth. The neuro prescribed me Neurontin. I had similar pain after my wisdom teeth extraction but this pain is much more severe. Anyone have any clue what this is? I have an MRI scheduled for Wed, but I doubt it will reveal anything

Re: intense jaw pain after root canal

sounds like trigeminal neuralgia. You need a good anti inflammatory drug like CARBAMAZEPINE which is also used as an anticonvulsant in other cases.

After having seriously invasive procedures like root canals done, it can tale several months for possiblly damaged or inflamed facial nerve endings to heal.

During that time, take the above mentioned drug - It should start helping possibly even after the first dose!

AND - if it turns out to not be damaged nerve/tissue - taking the above mentioned medication won't kill you and can deliver much needed, non-narcotic analgesia.

Also alternating hot and cold compresses can be of some help.
