Cold Trout Fishing

Had a great time down Dularge yesterday as the 2009 Fall Winter Scotch Classic was fabulous! Started the cold morning at Jug’s arriving before daybreak. The temperature was in the low 30’s with the +15 NW wind howling. Received advice from Mr. Jug himself suggesting that I should see a psychiatrist.

Not much choice today, but to fish the deeper, dead-end waterways. LUMCON showed the water temperature dipping below 48 degrees. That’s pretty cold for trout with not much chance of any action if the trout would have to fight the current on a falling tide.

The morning started off slow and cold. Landed a couple of keeper reds and trout while throwing back many 12 to 16 inch reds. The trout started coming to life around 10am. Finished my limit around 1pm. A very slow retrieve on the bottom in six ft. of water was the ticket today. The trout were mixed going 13 to 22 inches with most averaging 16 inches.

Headed down the bayou to join the gang at the Classic. Perfect weather by then as the wind was blowing just enough to keep the gnats at bay, but the sun was shining to make it comfortable. Shared lots of laughs, good food, and music with the bunch. Many thanks to Ike for putting on the event. Great to hook-up with everyone in person and especially getting to fish next to all you guys.
