Sight-Fishing the Reds 10-8 and 10-9

Finally got a break from the wind, so I took advantage and fished Friday and Saturday.

Friday: Only a slight breeze at daylight so I decided to try for trout.

I didn't find any trout action and saw no bird activity all day. The tide was falling hard at daylight with low water in the Sister Lake area. I guess the shrimp must have moved during the night which may explain the lack of bird activity. After trying many spots with no success, I figured the redfishing should be better. Found the reds cruising the shallow oyster reefs in the bays and ponds. With clean water, calm weather and abundant sunshine, the sight-fishing was excellent. After boxing a quick limit, I headed to my favorite redfish pond in the area. The reds were stacked in the pond and were aggressively feeding on shrimp, minnows, and mullets.

The reds were coming out of the water feeding on the bait. Half of their backs were showing as they would get on the flats to catch their prey. I released a few more, but it was very difficult to get the fish to bite as thousands of live bait specimens were their first choice.

I spent the rest of the day looking for trout through the tide change, but gave up and ended the day with only four specs. The reds were good size going 21 to 26 inches. The largest going 7 ½ lbs.

Saturday: Another blue-bird morning with slick-calm water.

Had about the same results Saturday as Friday when it came to trout and reds. The tide was falling even harder and already low by daylight. I fished east of Sister Lake finding very clean water with lots of bait, but no trout to speak of. Observed no bird action Saturday morning either. I guess we’ll need a change in the tide pattern to find the specks feeding on shrimp.

Redfishing was still hot as the bronze-backs were again feeding over the shallow reefs. It took me a little longer to catch my limit as the fish wanted the live bait which was abundant. A limit of reds was caught using Tsunami minnows as they weren’t impressed with my gold spoon or plastic chubs in the clean water.

I looked for trout after finishing with the reds, but only found a couple of white trout. I ended the day in the early afternoon with a mixed bag of fish. Five reds going 22 to 26 inches, four specks, two whites, and a drum made for a fun day on the water.
