Shoes

Are shoes necessary for Icelandic Horses?

Re: Shoes

Years ago, people assumed that shoes were necessary. Some breeders / trainers use shoes to "fix" a horse's gait, but that's probably not what we want to do. It's a quick fix, not long lasting; best done thru good training.

Re: Shoes

My icelandic has pretty tough hooves and it would be a waste of money to shoe him, we've never had any problems with his feet at all.

Re: Shoes

I think i depends on what sorts of roads/ground you have the chance to use. If you have to ride on roads of asphalt or other hard ground. My horse got really sorefooted when i didn´t shod her in january-february (but I live in Icey cold Sweden).
Generally I´m all for the idea of not having shoes on the horse, but it dipends on the horse.
