I'm currently riding a Giant SCR 3.0 I'm looking at upgrading my bike and would value some advice on which way to go and what to avoid.

Re: which bike to buy?
One that fits really well is the most important bit, do as many test rides of the bikes you can afford, also consider building one up, ie pick a frame, forks, wheels so it suits exactly what you want and your budget.
If you're not into bike bling there will be loads along on this thread shortly (Turboman!) who will be able to give you lots and lots of advice, but at the end of the day it must be comfortable and suit your needs! Best deals come at the end of the season when they are selling off '09 stock. Be wary of second hand as you don't know the history, mileage, wear and tear etc, it could be a false economy.
Think about what you want it for, ie training and racing, or just racing, just training, the types of racing, will you also commute on it etc, etc.

If you want good value and performance for your money, then Planet X is hard to beat. If you want individuality, don't get a Planet X (or a Cervelo for that matter).
It's best to indentify a budget first of all, then whether you want another 'road bike' or a triathlon specific bike. There will be plenty of 'last seasons' bikes on offer during the off-season if you can wait until then.

Re: which bike to buy?
I think Kelda and "On A Limb" have covered the main points. The big names such as Trek, Giant, Specialized etc all make good bikes and Planet X are phenomenal value for money (and you can even get them in shocking pink if that floats your particular boat - you certainly won't lose that in transition!).
Set you price point and then go and test as many of them as you can. If you're unsure of the size you need then investing in a bike fit session maybe a good investment.
