5 minute interview - Sam Wright

The 5 minute interview is back! This time it is Sam Wright, our very own Tour Manager.

1. The reason I started triathlon was......due to rugby injury at University (broken leg). I joined the cross country club and then formed the university triathlon club with a few friends.

2. To balance family life, work and training I ..... plan meticulously, and try to do races in pleasant destinations that coincide with my fiancés holidays, and then make a trip out of it. But training is always the first to be sacrificed.

3. Before a race I ........ panic that I wont make it in time to registration, and will have wasted my money. It’s actually my recurring dream in race season.

4. During a long training session I....... try and enjoy the scenery. My favourite training area is the Peak District. It’s beautiful on a summer’s day. Unforgiving in winter.

5. The last time I stacked it was........ on a long training ride in Lanzarote. I ran out of energy and became very cold. Luckily it was a group ride, and several people gave me layers/gels etc. Nice people. Just because the weather is warm, doesn’t mean you don’t have to fuel up or dress appropriately!

6. My most embarrassing triathlon moment....... was losing my bike coming into T1 during Dambuster in 2006. And the inevitable tannoy announcement. And then forgetting where to put it on my entry to T2. And the tannoy announcement!

7. I prefer.....1 piece. But sometimes 2 pieces are quite useful for long races.

8. Something that not many people know about me...... is I used to be quite an accomplished chorister.

9. My pet hate is....... slavish reliance on statistics. If it feels right, it probably is right.

10. The thing that saps me of energy (beyond triathlon) is ......organising the RAF triathlon Overseas Visits, and trying to recruit reserves!

11. In the event of a house fire.......I would rescue my pet greyhound, and my fiancé. Everything else is replaceable (and insured!).

12. If I could live anywhere.......it would be Lincolnshire, believe it or not. I have very happy memories of the place. Even Cranwell. Does that make me a sociopath?

13. My favourite holiday destination is.......no single place. I would prefer to get a round-the world-ticket.

14. My ideal day would be.......early start, with a swim, hearty breakfast, perfect weather, long cycle with my Dad till lunchtime, pub lunch, 6 Nations matches on the sofa with a 6-pack, long evening stroll with the dog and the fiancé, and then retire to the pub for a lock-in. No Mobile Phone!

15. My ideal night out would be........in my favourite pub in Derbyshire, with all my mates from home.

16. My favourite film is.....I have so many! My Shortlist: Master and Commander; Toy Story 2; Fight Club; Akira; The Usual Suspects (the first time I saw it). I love Starship Troopers for my turbo sessions! I do sustained intervals whenever there is shooting. Tough session.

17. In another life......I would have been a science teacher.

18. My greatest fear is........losing my memories.

19. My earliest sporting memory is........the smell of amateur rugby club bars – sweat, mud, horse linament and stale beer. An intoxicating mix for a 3 year old!

20. My favourite smell is........ not the smell of amateur rugby clubs! Probably baking.

21. If I could time travel.......I would leave well alone. I’ve seen Back To the Future 2!

22. Describe triathlon in 3 words.......Time, commitment, fun.

23. The most important lesson life has taught me.......is that its not about being the best, its about being the most adaptable.

Thanks Sam for those wise words. But a chorister? Really? Looking forward to the karaoke at Club La Santa now!!!

Re: 5 minute interview - Sam Wright

Please don't make him explain it!

Re: 5 minute interview - Sam Wright

I notice the dog was mentioned first!

Re: 5 minute interview - Sam Wright

Lol!

Kev - think angelic faces, lined up in church singing before the proverbials drop ...

Re: 5 minute interview - Sam Wright

"angelic" - lol think you have wrong idea about me when I was teenager Kelda! Was mostly chatting up the altos and the sopranos ...sadly to no avail, I was only a geeky tenor, and the bass guys were much cooler.

PS dogs have much smaller lungs than humans, so cannot tolerate much smoke, plus my fiance smokes filthy tobacco, so chances are it was one of her fags that brought the place down!!!

A smoker, mm, couldn't live with one of those, wonder how many of our number a) smoke and/or b) live with smokers? Just a random thought!

Yeah and you still owe me the five euros for the emergency chocolate we had to stop and buy and force feed you!
