Hi GM, thanks for the response. I browsed through the link, but am still confused with the particular example I gave, because the second part of the sentence (after the semicolon) isn't a complete sentence. And I am assuming sentences on either side of the semicolon must be complete sentences?
Also, would it be okay to use an em dash instead of semicolon in the example I'd given?
(1) It would be okay to use a dash instead of a semicolon.
(2) I think a semicolon is okay. I think "For, I'd always feared him." is a sentence. I would say that 'For,' is a little archiac, but it's a conjunction in my view.
If he'd asked me, I wouldn't have gone with him; for, I'd always feared him.
