welcome or welcomed?

Looking for clarification on a previous post (link found at the bottom), with question, "Would it be correct to say "tips are welcome" or "tips are welcomed"?". The reply given was "...actually, you can say both.

Welcome is an adjective in its own right, and welcomed iS a participle of the verb to welcome."

Could you please further clarify the above, as I had thought that since "welcomed" is a past participle of "welcome" - as you mentioned - the inclusion of "are" in the statement would mean "tips are welcomed" would be a conflict of participles, hence incorrect?

Thanks in advance!

Re: welcome or welcomed?

Mmmm, interesting. A conflict of participles? I'm not sure what that is, I'm afraid.

My rationale for the "both" answer was that participles are adjectives.

It's the same structure as this:

The doors are painted.

Is this a 'conflict of participles'?
