Sinks "Below" vs Sinks "Under"

Is the proper term "sinks under water" or "sinks below water"?

My sister also mentioned that it might be "sinks into water".

The complete sentence I am trying to write would be:

The cornstarch sinks _______ the water.

What word should I put in the blank? Please help.

Re: Sinks "Below" vs Sinks "Under"

This is a great question. As a native English speaker, I would say this for your example:

sinks into (8/10)
sinks below (5/10)
sinks under (2/10)

That's my sense. None is wrong.

Re: Sinks "Below" vs Sinks "Under"

The best answer would be sinks under water.

But make sure that the two chioces here do not have any best answer. The best one here will be sinks "into" the water.
