Nautical: 'in' or 'on'

What are the rules for the use of 'in' or 'on', in a nautical environment.

Does one sail in a ship, or on a ship. Does the rule change for crew?

Are there other circumstances where the rule applies?

Re: Nautical: 'in' or 'on'

I've thought some more about this...

Does a plane land 'in' or 'on'...

We land in Scotland/France/Ireland, but land on the Isle of Man.

Could the answer be size related? If so, at what point does 'in' become 'on'?
