Is it correct to use colons within points in a list that have been separated by semicolons? For example: Despite the recession numerous industries showed an increase in turnover: oil and gas: up 6.7%; transport: grew 2.1% .....
It's no crime I'm aware of. But, I am a little uncomfortable with it. I think it's fine with the colons removed.
Despite the recession numerous industries showed an increase in turnover: oil and gas were up 6.7%; transport grew 2.1%;
Or, go for bullets:
Despite the recession numerous industries showed an increase in turnover:
oil and gas: up 6.7%
transport: grew 2.1%
It would be a strict grammarian who picked you up for your version. Be consistent throughout your list though. If one list item does not have a colon, find a better format if I were you.
