One of the aims in RE is to enable pupils to develop respectful positive attitudes towards those who hold different beliefs or values to their own (Beadle et al. 2007). They also point out that the non-statutory national framework for RE in England identifies four attitudes essential for learning in RE; self awareness, which helps develop a positive sense of religious, moral and spiritual ideas; respect for all, valuing difference and diversity for common good; openmindedness, engaging in argument and disagreeing respectfully; and appriciation and wonder, developing the capacity to respond to questions of meaning and purpose. Beadle et al. (2007) believe that attitudes are not only explored in RE but they are also experienced.
