forward and forwards

I am confused by the use of forward and forwards and backward and backwards. Can someone explain how they should be used?

Re: forward and forwards

Forward is used as an adjective, as in 'forward planning'. Use forward also at other times (please forward the information, from this day forward). The exception is when describing a movement towards, as in 'run forwards into the water'. Same with backward. Backward is an adjective, such as in 'a backward step'. But add the 's' when used as an adverb, as in 'walking backwards'.
