Both?

The sentence transformation task:
Pete is a student and so is his brother. BOTH
What is the correct answer:
1. Both Pete and his brother are students or
2. Pete and his brother are both students ???

They mean the same. And, both are acceptable. It's about emphasis. Place "both" next to the thing you want to emphasise.
