Apostrophe question...

Hello! Please help me decide where to place the apostrophe in a sentence.

I have multiple cats. A nail on one cat is bloody. So, which sentence is correct:

1. One of my cat's nails is bloody.
2. One of my cats' nails is bloody.

Thanks!

Re: Apostrophe question...

This is a really good question.

The answer has to be:

One of my cats' nails...

This is because apostrophes that show possession never appear inside the word. That rules out "One of my cat's" because you would never say "One of my cat".

I think this ought to be treated like a singular noun ending s.

E.g.

Wales' exports.
Moses' house.

The quirk here is I suspect it's also "Two of my cats' nails...". That means two cats. If you wrote "Two of my cat's nails...", that's two nails and one cat.

Great question. The answer is "One of my cats' nails..."

Personally, I would reword this if writing it.
