I am a 5th grade teacher, and one grammar question has me puzzled. Here is the sentence: A soccer team has eleven players. The key says that players is the direct object. I get that, because it answers the question what. But where I am puzzled, is that has is not an action verb.

Lots of verbs aren't action verbs. You have a linking verb in your example. (They can take a direct object too.)
