Difference between- Few, a few and some

Hi,

I am really confused in the usage of terms- few, a few and some. Plz help me with this

Trying to generalise.

There were few , there were a few birds
Indicates a smaller number than some larger set

A few , a few birds flew away
Indicates less than the totality?

Some , some birds remained.
Indicates a subset of a group.

Usage varies, what follows seems quite regular?
