The difference between 'a' and 'the'

One day a mother asked her daughter 'where were you been?' the daughter answered
'I was helping the boy who fell off his bike'
'I was helping a boy who fell off his bike'
The question is 'which of the two answers above is grammatically correct?

Re: The difference between 'a' and 'the'

You come home from school very late. You say:
A) Sorry, but I stopped to help the boy who fell off his bicycle.
Or
B) Sorry, but I stopped to help a boy who fell off his bicycle.
Why?

Re: The difference between 'a' and 'the'

Use the definite article ('the') if the mother is aware that someone fell off a bicycle....that way you are narrowing it down to one boy and everyone has an understanding who that boy is. If the mother was unaware of this particular boy's bicycle accident, then say 'a boy' (i.e. use the indefinite article).
