adverbs and adverbials

Hi!

I'm working on an assignment for school about adverbs and adverbials. I'm being asked to explain the differences between adverbs and adverbials, but when I read that adverbs can function as adverbials I got confused. How are they different if one can function as the other???
HELP!!!

Thank you!

Re: adverbs and adverbials

Good question. Probably requires a longer answer than I can give you, but I will provide some examples and capitalise the adverbs and adverbials. I tend to think an adverb is just a single word, whereas adverbials contain more than one word, being phrases (does not contain a finite verb) or clauses (does contain a finite verb) that can take the place of an adverb. Eg:
The meeting went SMOOTHLY. (adverb)
The meeting went LIKE CLOCKWORK. (adverbial phrase)
The meeting went JUST AS WE PLANNED. (adverbial clause)
Good luck!
