Proximity rule

Does the proximity rule apply if two subjects are connected by 'and'?

e.g. Two girls and one boy IS in the room.
One boy and two girls ARE in the room.

Are the two sentences above correct in terms of subject-verb agreement?

Re: Proximity rule

I would use 'ARE' in both sentences.

Re: Proximity rule

No, "and" creates a plural compound subject. So:

A and B are...
A or B is...
