Simple future vs. future progressive

All,

Why is it that we see increasing use of the future progressive rather than the more concise -- and perfectly adequate -- simple future?

Example: "Next Saturday we *will be holding* a garage sale beginning at 3 p.m." instead of the much more streamlined "Next Saturday we *will hold* a garage sale beginning at 3 p.m."

Re: Simple future vs. future progressive

I would say the future progressive tense was a good fit for your example.

Looks like an "an on-going action that will occur in the future" to me.

I see your point though. Every action takes some time. At what point does that become"on going" action? Mmm?
