'came' & 'went'

Is this correct 'when he eventually went back to England . . .' or should it
be 'came'? Thanks

Re: 'came' & 'went'

Either is correct, but this is a matter of perspective. It depends on where the speaker is located. What's important is you came here and you went there.

So if the speaker is inside England then he came to England is correct because he came here.

If the speaker is not in England then he went to England because he went there.

Let's say you go to the store to buy some milk.

If I met you inside the store you would tell me, "I came to buy milk."

If you came home and I asked you where you had been you would say, "I went to the store to buy some milk."

So the importance is where the speaker is located and where the subject is going to. Is he going here (came) or there (went)?
