Hyphen in "a quarter-million pounds"?

Hi! I saw that "3-and-a-quarter-million pounds" would be hyphenated, as it's considered a compound adjective, but what about without the "3-and-a" or some such like term at the beginning?

Thanks a quarter-mil! (or maybe a quarter mil, with no hyphen ;] )

Your options are:

A quarter of a million pounds

A quarter-million pounds
