Syllables - how to "break" a word into syllables

I need help please.

Is there a rule to help me know where to break a word to see how many syllables it contains for example the word linguistics have 3 syllables
where did they break it up? lin - guis - tics??

It's a good question. I'm afraid I don't know of any rule that determines where the breaks should be. Some are easy:

Cockatoo

That's cock-a-too

But some are harder:

Ling-uis-tics / lin-gui-stics / ling-uist-ics

Sorry. I don't know, but I would like to know!
