Apostrophe for omitted letters.

Hi,

When abbreviating the word "Champions" to "Champs" wouldn't there be an apostrope between the letter P and S to show where the three letters were omitted?

Considering the word "Champs" used in this situation is actually a slang term, wouldn't the apostrophe signify that you are abbreviating the word "Champions?"

Re: Apostrophe for omitted letters.

No, in this case apostrophe is not used. The word "Champs" is so widely used that as such it became a standard.

Re: Apostrophe for omitted letters.

Drove past the police station today and apostrophe used improperly on very large sign. It's everywhere!!! Unbelievable that people use it incorrectly so often even for the names of their businesses. e.g. Finger's and Toe's Esthetics. Volunteer Police Academy's.

It is so painful to see people do that to themselves. Bad grammar ruins their business before they start.

Good grammar rocks. It needs to be taught properly again in schools at a young age.

Nah, champs is a word in its own right. And, you can't make up your own contractions.
