yourself or the other person first?

Which is correct?

My wife and I went to the store.
Me and my wife went to the store.

I feel for reasons of politeness and grammar, the other person should always be first!

Re: yourself or the other person first?

The first one is grammatically correct. The second one is actually grammatically incorrect.

In the first sentence, take away 'My wife and' and you're left with 'I went to the store', which sounds (and is) correct.

However, take away 'and my wife' from the second sentence and you're left with 'Me...went to the store'. This is obviously incorrect.

The correct version of the second sentence should be 'I and my wife went to the store'.

'I' refers to the person doing something (subject); me refers to the person something is done to (object).

As for politeness...that's another matter.
