Used to/would

Can anyone tell me please when can I use would instead of used to? Are they the same or is there any difference? Thank you

Re: Used to/would

As far as I know, both 'would' and 'used to' are used to express something happening regularly in the past but not any longer now. However, there are some differences to use them. 'would' is used much more limited than 'used to':
1/ 'would' is only used just when having the time frame in the past before it. Ex.:
+ When I was in childhood, I would get up late. (grammatically)
+ I would get up late (when I was in childhood). (ungrammatically)

Compared with 'used to':
+ When I was in childhood, I used to get up late. (grammatically)
+ I used to get up late (when I was in childhood). (grammatically)

2/ 'would' in this meaning, cannot used with some stative verbs such as be, feel, love, understand...Ex:
+ When I was in childhood, I would love eating sweet food.(ungrammatically)
+ When I was in childhood, I used to love eating sweet food.(grammatically)

So, in case you are not sure which one to use, just choose 'used to', no any limit to use it.
Hope this help you.
