the origin of the saying- 'raining cats and dogs'

The origin of the saying- 'raining cats and dogs' comes from the custom during Victorian times when household pets, i.e. cats and dogs, were used to sleeping during the night on the eaves of houses. When it rained heavily, the water from the roof washed them off the eaves and they came down with the torrent of water that emanated from the roofs of houses. People mistakenly thought that they came from the skies and coined the term - 'raining cats and dogs'.
