Besides or Besides that

Please help. This doesn't sound right, but I can't find a rule to support my feeling. Using 'Besides' or 'Besides that'

"During Christmas, people look at the Christmas lights. They also go to church and sing carols. Besides, they exchange Christmas presents."

What about in British English or in American English? Does that make a difference to the correct answer?
