The grammatical name?

-He considered her unworthy of the position

Please, what is the grammatical name given to "unworthy of the position"

Many thanks

Re: The grammatical name?

Start with:

She is unworthy : 'unworthy ' is an adjective, telling us about 'she'.

(This is clearer if I write:
She is an unworthy person : here, it is obvious that 'unworthy' is an adjective.)

Then:
He considered that she is unworthy.

Now, if we condense that sentence to:

He considered her unworthy.

…can you see that 'unworthy' is still an adjective, telling us about 'her'.

So that:
He considered her UNWORTHY OF THE POSITION.
…is an adjectival phrase.

Re: The grammatical name?

Hi Bazza consider this:

-I find trouble loading my email.

I see (loading my email) to be an adjectival phrase. What do you say of this Bazza? - the reason is someone has had a hard time accepting that it is an adjectival phrase. What do you say Bazza?

Re: The grammatical name?

…because it isn't.

I can see that you might think that 'loading my email' tells us about/qualifies the noun 'trouble'…

…but 'loading' is a gerund, a verbal NOUN, and nouns do not qualify other nouns.

"I find trouble when I try loading my email."

Re: The grammatical name?

"...and nouns do not qualify other nouns."

…unless they are in the possessive form:

a man's man
a gentleman's gentleman
a ladies' man

Re: The grammatical name?

Thanks Bazza!

I thought it is parellel or analogous to:

-The boy swimming in the pool is my brother.
While 'swimming in the pool' is functioning as an adjectival phrase

Why do you say ''loading is a gerund? I ask this because gerunds always start a sentence and shouldn't be found in the middle of a sentence like in the case of 'loading'. What do you say to this, Bazza? Again please give examples of gerunds found in a sentence.

Thanks

Re: The grammatical name?

"I ask this because gerunds always start a sentence and shouldn't be found in the middle of a sentence like in the case of 'loading'."

He is in charge of building the new highway.
I will never quit smoking.
We postponed making any decision.
We heard whispering.
They denied having avoided me.
He talked me into coming to the party.
They frightened her out of voicing her opinion.

Re: The grammatical name?

Hi Bazza, thanks!

See the following:

- There is trouble 'Loading my email'. - I think it(loading my email) could be called a participial phrase either, what do you say?

***********************************************************************
Again,

- There is trouble 'in loading my email'. - I think this version(in laoding my email) could be an adjectival phrase, what do you say, Bazza?

Thanks!

Re: The grammatical name?

- There is trouble
loading my email.'

So, if you consider [loading] to be a gerund what is the function of [laoding my email] in the sentence?

Thanks!
