Do we need the dot after the abbreviation?

The abbreviated information printed in some faxes, name cards, and even some introducing brochures really confuse me recently.

Do we need the dot after the abbreviation?
Examples, Add for address, Tel for telephone, Fax for facsimile, Mob for mobile phone, Rd for road.
And I am not sure the abbreviations for mobile phone and cell phone.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Do we need the dot after the abbreviation?

American is different, but in English:

1. If an abbreviation consists of the first and last letters of a word, you don’t need to use a full stop at the end:
Mr
Ltd
Dr
Hence: Rd

2. If the abbreviation consists only of the first part of a word, then you should put a full stop at the end:
Wed. [= Wednesday]
Dec. [= December]

Hence:
tel.
add.

The word 'fax' is more used than 'facsimile', and has become more a substitute name than an abbreviation, so no period.
fax
