Number vs. word for chapter references within a text?

Hi there,

I'm writing a dissertation (hence, pretty formal writing style) and need to cross-reference chapters within the work. Which format is correct: "...as can be seen in Chapter 2..." or "...as can be seen in Chapter 2..."?

Thanks!

Jen

I think you meant to write, 'Chapter 2' or 'Chapter Two'.

It's 'Chapter 2', in the same way that pages 1 - 10 are designated with numbers, as opposed to written in letters, as in:

"There were three boys and two girls in the room."

"There were 65 boys at the sports day."

Thanks for your reply, Bazza! Yes, I meant "Chapter Two". Obviously not enough coffee yet this morning.

I would like to clarify what you're saying. I think you are saying that usually the numbers 1 to 10 are written as words (i.e., one to ten). However, this is not the case when referring to chapters and page numbers (or, I assume, figures and tables), which use numbers (i.e., 1 to 10). Is this correct?

Yes.
