apostrophes for terminology?

Is it acceptable to use apostrophes around terms, the first time they are used. For example:

Yalom described four universal and interrelated givens: ‘the search for meaning,’ ‘existential aloneness,’ ‘death,’ and ‘free will and responsibility.’ (or should these be double, and a page number provided with the citation?)

The given of ‘aloneness’ refers to the idea that although...

As Heidegger (1962, as cited in Cooper, 2003) explains, we are ‘thrown’ by birth into living.. . (from then on, no apostrophes? i.e. just use the word thrown as it is?)
