opened vs opening

Is it correct and does it keep same meaning if I changed the following sentence;

1) Boxes are being opened in the mailroom

Into;

2) Boxes are opening in the mailroom.

Isn't it the same meaning? If so, isn't it more concise and more efficient to use 2nd sentence? Thank you!!

Re: opened vs opening

IMO, the second version appears to state that the boxes are opening by themselves.
