is lacking or lacks?

1. A strong gravitational pull is lacking on the moon.
2. The moon lacks a strong gravitational pull.
Which is correct? Thanks a lot.

Re: is lacking or lacks?

You should try to work these things out for yourself.

Which one do you think is correct, and why?

I think #1 is incorrect, but I don't know why. Please explain it to me. Thanks again.

2. The moon lacks a strong gravitational pull.

Well, the meaning is similar, but the use of the progressive aspect in 1. tends to imply something less permanent than the non-progressive in 2.

So now which one do you think is better?

Well done, that's correct!

The moon will never have a stong gravitational pull and hence the more permanent meaning of #2 is better.
