Commas and Dates

I have been out of school for a while but I keep seeing dates with commas either missing or in one spot but not both. It happens mostly on television ads for upcoming shows. I can't find anything on the Comma page about dates. Am I missing something, did something change?

Thanks

Re: Commas and Dates

I have noticed a growing tendency to omit commas altogether in correspondence, though not in legal documents of course.

You'll find numerous ways of representing dates, some with commas, some without:

BrE: 2 June, 1980 ~ 2 June 1980 ~ 2nd June 1980 ~ 2nd June, 1980

AmE: June 2, 1980 ~ June 2 1980 ~ June 2nd 1980 ~ June 2nd, 1980

BrE typically differs from AmE as I've shown above. Personally, I prefer the BrE variants since the two numerical fields are separated by the month.

Re: Commas and Dates

So there is no "rule" per se.

It's very annoying because there is no consistency.

Re: Commas and Dates

No, there is no single fixed rule.

In the US, there are two main style guides that writers and publishers often adhere to: The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press. But they have different recommendations too!

Whereabouts do you live?

Central NY, but I grew up in Denver, CO. I am however, old.
I have a degree in Graphic Design, that's why it bugs me.
