"He awoke in the desert, blood encrusted his ear".

The first two are fine, since the underlined clauses are subordinate. But the third one is wrong. It is an example of a "run-on" sentence. This happens when two separate main clauses are not separated by a suitable punctuation mark, like a full-stop or a semi colon:

"He awoke in the desert. Blood encrusted his ear".

Alternatively, the clause could be recast as a subordinate one:

"He awoke in the desert to find that blood encrusted his ear".
