Hi,
American cities have not always had skyscrapers, but it is now almost a century and a half since the first skyscrapers began to distinguish their skylines.

Please tell me which word is subject of... "had" skyscrapers.

It sometimes seems like American cities have always had skyscrapers.

American cities have not always had skyscrapers, ....
