"I don't like burnt toast". "Burnt" is an adjective. There are several ways of telling that it's an adjective: (1) Like many adjectives it can be modified by the adverb "very: "I don't like very burnt toast". (2) It can occur as complement to complex-intransitive verbs: "This toast is burnt". (3) It can occur as complement to complex-transitive verbs like "find": "I found the toast quite burnt". "Burnt" has the properties of indisputable adjectives and hence must belong in that class. PaulM
