Both is fine but the first one seems like the one an average English speaker would say because it's more simple and sounds better. The second sentence sounds rigid if you know what I mean ( mainly the word heavily)

The rain was so heavy that the ball game was canceled.

It rained so heavily that the ball game was canceled.



These are both perfectly natural -- just two different ways of saying the same thing.
