Premises is or premises are

I understand that word "premises" could mean a piece of land or building occupied by an organization. I wonder if it correct to say:-

A) The premises was visited...

OR

B) The premises were visited...

Sentence A seems more logical to me as it refers to a single piece of land, so the verb should be singular even thought the word "premises" is in plural form.
