Identifying Subordinate Clauses

Helping my son! Help! Directions say: Identify subordinate clause and tell whether it is an adjective clause, adverb clause or noun clause.

1 The horses in this painting have both front leges extended far to the front and both hind legs stretched far out behind.
2 Today, we know instantly that this is an impossible position for a horse
3 Painters of the time thought this new technology was truly amazing!

4 They were the first artists in history to know exactly what a horse really looked like at each point in its stride.

Re: Identifying Subordinate Clauses

Adjective clause: here

Noun clause: here

1 "The horses in this painting" (< noun phrase) have "both front leges extended far to the front" (< adj clause) and "both hind legs stretched far out behind" (< adj clause).
2 Today, we know instantly that this is an impossible position for a horse
3 "Painters of the time" (< noun phrase) thought this new technology was truly amazing!

4 They were "the first artists in history" (< noun phrase) to know "exactly what a horse really looked like at each point in its stride" (< noun clause).

For me, this is a quite a difficult exercise. Sometimes a phrase fits the definition of a noun phrase and an adjective phrase. Perhaps, there isn't just one answer to these questions.
