The other day I wrote this sentence on the board:

Paul left the door open.

One of my students asked me,"Shouldn't it be 'Paul left the door opened.'" After all, we wouldn't say, "door close," but instead, "door closed."

I'm wondering if this structure has been simplified over time. Any help would be much appreiciated!

The word 'open' is an object complement.

It is correct. However, 'opened' is also correct, because it is also an adjective. (It just happens to be the participle adjective from the verb 'to open'.)
