This forum has a long history, by interent standards anyway-unfortunately it has been abandoned for far too long due to real life circumstances knocking the heck out of what had been my very real desire to keep this board alive and well forever so that all of us could meet here and communicate with each other everyday.

I'm not sure that a forum like this is even needed nowadays since the advent of facebook, etc...but I hope that this once thriving BB does bring some of us back together again and that maybe some new folks will join us as well!

Independent Living

Does anyone know what this program is about through the VA. I am 100% unemployable. I have to go see someone at the VA tomorrow about this program. Anyone know what this is?

Re: Independent Living

Robert:
In order to enter the Program you must submit an application (VA Form 28-1900.

I would sugest that anyone thats drawing IU talk to a good VSO before filling out an application to see just how it effects their IU Status.

Independent Living Program

Independent Living Program (ILP) participants must submit an application (VA Form 28-1900) for Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services (VR&E), complete a comprehensive evaluation with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) who must determine the applicant is entitled to services and that an ILP program is appropriate.

What Is The Independent Living Program?

The Independent Living program is to make sure that each eligible veteran is able, to the maximum extent possible, to live independently and participate in family and community life increasing their potential to return to work. Services may include the following:

assistive technology

specialized medical, health, and / or rehabilitation services
services to address any personal and / or family adjustment issues
independent living skills training
connection with community-based support services

Who May Qualify For ILP?

Veteran's whose service-connected disabilities are so severe they are currently unable to purse an employment goal.

How Are ILPs Developed?

When a Vocational Rehbilitation Counselor (VRC) determines that employment goals are not currently feasible. An evaluation of the veteran's independent living needs will be conducted. The VRC and veteran will work together to identify the veteran's needs. Together they will determine services required to address the identified needs. An individualized Independent Living Program will be written providing the services necessary to meet the veteran's identified needs. Referral to specialized rehabilitation facilities and / or for consultation with other rehabilitation professionals may be necessary in the development and implementation of a veteran's ILP.

Re: Independent Living

I am in the independent Livig program and have been for a few years now. The program is assisting me in starting a business which some of you may be aware of I with the assistance of DVA and the independent living program have start a military design consultant program The Voc rehab office in Chicago has 4th ID unit T-shirts, flags and other items all over the walls of some of the conselers offices. It is a good program for any vet that wants help in starting a business. However I am severely disabled due to the effects of Agent orange and have three 100% ratings so I do get more consideration for that. But anyone with a disability is eligible for the independent living program if the vet is entitled to Voc Rehab.
