Smoove + Turrell - 'Antique Soul'

Smoove + Turrell - 'Antique Soul' (Jalapeno Records)

Smoove's 2nd album sees the funk/breaks star team up with John Turrell, a man with a promising future and a voice reminiscent of Stevie Winwood, both gravelly and pained with experience but can also roll alongside the funky beats that lift you up to the highs!
It's a very strong collection of grooves from the stunningly infectious current single 'You Don't Know' through to 'Latin Groove', a guaranteed floorfiller with a very different take on Yazoo's 'Don't Go' inbetween.
The most impressive aspect is that Smoove + Turrell keep the album both varied and yet consistent, the beats roll with a jazzy edge on 'Hypnotized'(reminds me of The Style Council, which is no bad thing) and then develop a funky attitude on tracks like 'Darker Days'.
'Antique soul' is an excellent album that proves soul is still very much alive amongst modern-day breakbeats!
